MAUT Method

Multi-Attribute Utility Theory

1976 Ralph L. Keeney and Howard Raiffa 4 Steps

MAUT (Multi-Attribute Utility Theory) is an MCDM method used to evaluate and rank alternatives. It converts the performance of each alternative into utility values, assigns weights to the criteria, and combines them into an overall utility score.

Form the decision matrix

Create the decision matrix with $m$ alternatives and $n$ criteria :

\[ X=\begin{bmatrix} x_{11} & x_{12} & \cdots & x_{1n}\\ x_{21} & x_{22} & \cdots & x_{2n}\\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots\\ x_{m1} & x_{m2} & \cdots & x_{mn} \end{bmatrix} \]

$x_{ij}$ presents the performance value of ith alternative on jth criterion, m and n are the numbers of alternatives and criteria respectively.

Weights: $w_1=0.7279$ · $w_2=0.2009$ · $w_3=0.0712$ (Entropy method)

Normalize the Decision Matrix

Formula

Normalize the decision matrix according to the type of criterion. For a benefit criterion :

$$ r_{ij}=\frac{x_{ij}-x_j^{\min}}{x_j^{\max}-x_j^{\min}} $$

For a cost criterion :

$$ r_{ij}=1+\frac{x_j^{\min}-x_{ij}}{x_j^{\max}-x_j^{\min}} $$

Where $r_{ij}$ is the normalized performance of alternative $A_i$ for criterion $C_j$.

$A_2$0.33330.00001.0000
$A_3$1.00001.00001.0000
Ranges used: $C_1$: $x^{\min}=10$, $x^{\max}=25$ · $C_2$: $x^{\min}=15$, $x^{\max}=25$ · $C_3$: $x^{\min}=30$, $x^{\max}=35$

Marginal utility score

Formula

The marginal utility score of alternative $A_i$ for criterion $C_j$ is calculated using the normalized value $r_{ij}$ :

$$ u_{ij}=\frac{e^{(r_{ij})^2}-1}{1.71} $$

Where $u_{ij}$ is the utility score and $r_{ij}$ is the normalized value of alternative $A_i$ with respect to criterion $C_j$.

$A_1$0.00000.16610.0000
$A_2$0.06870.00001.0048
$A_3$1.00481.00481.0048

Final utility score and ranking

Formula

The final utility score of alternative $A_i$ is calculated by summing the weighted marginal utility scores across all criteria :

$$ U_i=\sum_{j=1}^{n}w_j\,u_{ij} $$

Where $U_i$ is the overall utility score of alternative $A_i$.

Rank the alternatives according to their final utility scores :

$$ U_i>U_k \quad\Longrightarrow\quad A_i >A_k $$
AlternativeUtility Score ($U_i$)
$A_1$0.0334
$A_2$0.1215
$A_3$1.0048
Utility scores: $U_3=1.0048 >U_2=0.1215 >U_1=0.0334$
Final ranking: $A_3 \succ A_2 \succ A_1$
